love or money?

I'm seriously stressing out about our upcoming move. For one, it's hard to find an apartment because we are so far away and won't be able to visit before we get up there. So we're trying to apartment hunt online so we can at least narrow down our choices and won't have to spend too many days in a hotel.

So I have a dilemma. It's about my dog, Reese. My grandmother wants to take him home to Alabama with her for the 6th months that we are in Virginia (we'll be moving again in January), to save us effort and money. I WANT to keep him with us, but I KNOW it is more practical for us to send him with her.

Yesterday, the housing people came to pre-inspect our house to let us know of any damages. We thought we had taken pretty good care of the place, but apparently there are too many pet stains on our carpet (we had serious issues house-training Reese in the beginning). I thought we would just have to shampoo the carpet, but apparently they want us to pay to completely replace all of the carpet in the whole house. (I am totally pissed about this one, especially since there are rooms in this house that Reese has never even been in, so I know it doesn't need to be completely replaced. But that is their "policy"). They haven't told us how much it will cost yet, but just the thought gives me a panic attack.

Now, I am trying to apartment hunt online, and the pet fees are ridiculous! All of the places that I have found are charging $400-600 nonrefundable pet deposits plus a monthly pet rent. Which was fine, when we didn't know we were going to be charged to replace all of the carpet in this house.

*SIGH*

So, like I said, I know it is practical to let him go home with Nanny. She will totally spoil him take excellent care of him. He has other dogs to play with there. And it will save us several hundred dollars.

But I am so overemotional right now, and the thought of him not being with us for so long makes me bust out crying (I've done it three times today). He is part of our family. I've had him since Jason and I got married. He's been my little cuddle buddy at night when Jason has to work the night shift. I just can't stand the thought of letting him go.

I know I'm being a little irrational, but come on internet friends, let me know. What would you do?

Oh dude, what a hard one. I think I'd probably let him go for 6 months. But that's in THEORY.

I think I would let him go as well. 6 months will fly by...you will see. The added expense PLUS whatever other pet related damages occur while you are in the apartment will add up as well. I hate to be a downer!

Erm...I vote for letting him spend time with Nanny. How big is he? How will he feel about an apartment? Remember you have another cuddle buddy that will take up all of your time for the next six months. By that time your munchkin will not be 24/7 needy and you will have more time for Reese. Plus! Money saved and the stress of worrying about future doggie boo-boos in the place you will be moving to shortly. Make sure you talk to someone about areas in Va Bch, too. Some are BAD. Some are good. Sorry for the novel!

As a HUGE dog lover - I would still let him go for the 6 months - TRUST me, with a baby, those 6 months will FLY by!! My 5 months with my new baby has gone by SO fast!!

I don't know. I think I would want to bring him with me. But then again it is so expensive to have a dog in an apartment. Ugh. I don't envy you. This is a tough choice. I'm afraid I'm no help.

I've never owned a pet so I won't be of much help on that regard.
